The Polo, or Le Polo, was published in numerous dance manuals throughout the 1880s. It is referred to in several sources as a French quadrille, and does appear in some French manuals of the period. Noted dancing master Allen Dodworth composed music for the Polo, noting on the cover that it was danced at Dieppe on August 25, 1880, and attributed the figures to "A. Paul".
